NewsFlash: Beer Fights Cancer
"Researchers are always looking for the magic bullet to kill cancer, and now they may have found it in a surprising place — a glass of beer! (Who knew?) It turns out that hops, which is the flavor component of beer, contains a cancer-fighting compound called xanthohumol.
Xanthohumol turns out to be toxic to several kinds of human cancer, including prostate, ovarian, breast, and colon. Further, it inhibits enzymes that can activate the development of cancer, and also helps detoxify carcinogens. It even seems to slow down tumor growth in the early stages. Scientists are trying to produce hops that contain even more xanthohumol, and the Germans are racing to develop a “health” beer.
But wait – there’s more! Other compounds in hops are potent phytoestrogens which may help with post-menopausal hot flashes and also prevent osteoporosis.
Beers that provide the most benefits contain the most hops, and include strong brews such as ale, stout, and porter. In general, the darker the beer, the better. For those who can’t stand beer, herbal supplements made from hops contain the highest concentrations of beneficial elements."

“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
-Benjamin Franklin

"Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer. ”
-Dave Barry

I can't believe I gave up yet another healthy option for Lent. With beer and chocolate out for the last 40 days I could have affected my health in a big way. :))

Ooops! Sorry, don't know what happened there.

Now Peajay, if I didn't know ya better, I would think you'd let slip the Lent promise with all those oopsies on the enter button!! ;)))

An bhfuil an col seisir ag a Guinness?! ;D
...(Is the second cousin at the Guinness?!)
(those who know the Gaelic well, feel free to correct the grammar!! :)

An old advert in the UK went like this:

Guinness, Guinness,
gives you strength,
gives you strength,
gives you strength,
Guinness, Guinness
gives you strength,
Guinness gives you strength!

and... when Peter O'Toole was asked to name his favorite Irish food, he replied: “My number one choice is Guinness. My number two choice would be Guinness. My number three choice would have to be Guinness.”

So the Irish and Germans know something about something and the Scots know something about something else HGF!

Try telling "beer is good" to the ex-husband and two children of a Scotswoman I know, whose alcoholism has destroyed her own life and robbed a man of what was once his wife and two children of their mother.

Hi Mrs S
I like the Guinness in half with the Bass more than just by itself. Still, there's something to be said for the health of it; in moderation, of course. :)

Hi Alfred,
Welcome!
I do empathise with the lives of which you speak, and also know of similiar situations. It's unfortunate when people choose substances to 'escape'; and I do acknowledge the genetic predisposition, and the unfortunate influence of the 'drink to get drunk' culture.

This is no way equates with what I intended, which was about having a pint with friends, and the fun of the social interaction. There are those with whom I'm acquainted, who are recovering, and it's just as easy to have a soda, tea, coffee, etc.

It is easy to make light of the 'just have a beer, and life will be better' scenario. Thank you for the reminder, that for some, this isn't always funny.

Hmmm … maybe I should make a effort to cultivate a taste for beer after lo these many years? I’ll be chuckling over Peajay’s ‘struggles’ this morning and your quick and clever response for a while. I hope you and that furry bear of yours had a wonderful Easter.
Hugs and blessings,

Hi Storyteller,
thanks! Had to work Easter, but that meant that I didn't miss the glorious sunrise on the way to work! :)
