A Civil war soldier's (actual) letter to his wife is read with the song playing in the backround. It's written most eloquently and heartfelt, and is bittersweet as the soldier is killed the following week at the battle of Bull Run.
The way these people wrote is so rich in comparison with today's written word, and we won't even go into text speak! :/ :)
I first heard the tune when we saw the Royal Marines in concert and then found it on the Civil war CD which was from a tv programme. This version featured the letter from Sullivan Ballou to his wife and combined with the music is enough to move the listener to tears. It creates an image through his words of such abiding love that remains even after the passing of the loved one that will stay with me forever. Words can be such powerful tools.
HGF - this is one of my favourite pieces of music too! I've been listening to it over and over again, since I read your entry about an hour ago.

Heh, I always find it a little odd when other people use my video for the Ashokan Farewell theme. Though I do highly agree it is one of the best songs I've heard played on the fiddle in generations.

I grew up with stories from the Civil War from my grandmother. Her Grandmother was a child during the civil war, and passed down the stories.
Your video was very well done in combining pics with the music for the overall feeling. So, hey, I picked the best one!
